A coil fold is a type of strengthening motion.

It is used to develop the gluten in the dough during bulk fermentation.

Coil folds are similar to stretch and fold in the sense that they should be performed on the dough without removing it from its proofing container.

Simply put, it is a method of folding dough that relies on both surface tension and gravity.
