These sourdough breadsticks make the perfect treat. Super buttery, with coarse salt and garlic on the outside and deliciously tender on the inside. They’re super easy to make and make the perfect evening snack, especially when you’re feeling a bit peckish after dinner. Pair these delicious sticks with a variety of dipping sauces, for the ultimate sourdough experience.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 12 breadsticks 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup active bubbly sourdough starter
  • ¾ cup water
  • 1 ½ tbsp. sugar or honey
  • 1 ½ tbsp. salt
  • ¼ cup softened butter
  • 3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tbsp. melted butter
  • Coarse salt and garlic powder

Equipment

  • Stand mixer
  • Large bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Cutting board
  • Pizza cutter
  • Pastry brush

Instructions

  1. Combine sourdough starter, water, sugar, and softened butter in a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Gradually add flour ⅛ cup at a time, until the dough begins to pull away from the mixer. Mix these ingredients until a smooth dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on low speed for 8 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  3. Lightly grease a large mixing bowl, and transfer the dough into the bowl. Cover loosely with a lid and allow the dough to ferment at room temperature for 3-4 hours. Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours. Remove the dough from the fridge one hour before baking.
  4. Transfer your dough to a lightly floured work surface, and roll the dough to a 12×7-inch rectangle.
  5. Use a pizza cutter to slice the rectangular dough into 12 breadsticks. Transfer the shaped breadsticks onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Cover the baking sheet with plastic wrap and allow the breadsticks to proof in a warm place for 2 hours. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  7. After 2 hours, remove the plastic wrap from the baking sheet and place the breadsticks into the preheated oven. Bake the breadsticks on the center rack for 10 minutes, or until they’re a light shade of golden brown.
  8. Use a pastry brush to brush the hot breadsticks with melted butter. Sprinkle with salt and garlic powder.

Notes

  • If you’re looking to bake a batch of light and fluffy breadsticks, then you may want to add a packet of commercial yeast to your sourdough breadsticks recipe.
  • Serve these scrumptious sourdough breadsticks with your favorite dipping sauce. Store any leftovers in an airtight container.
