This healthy sourdough French toast recipe is simply to die for. Once you’ve taken the first bite, you just can’t get enough!

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 1 sandwich 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices of sourdough bread
  • ¾ cup of milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

Preparing your French toast

  1. Crack your eggs and drop them into a large mixing bowl, then add milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Whisk until the ingredients are well incorporated.
  2. Heat the butter on a griddle, frying pan, or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat until melted.
  3. Once the butter has melted, and the batter is ready, dip your slices of sourdough bread into the egg mixture, one at a time until well-coated. Make sure you don’t soak your bread in the egg mixture for long, as you may risk tearing the soaked bread before it reaches the pan!

Cooking the French toast

  1. Place the egg-soaked bread slices onto a hot skillet, then add the remaining bread slices. If you’re using a frying pan, you may have enough room to make 2 French toasts at a time.
  2. Fry each side of the bread for 3-5 minutes until they’re nice and crisp on the outside. Then flip your bread and pan-fry the other side until nice and golden brown. You can add more butter to the pan if needed.
  3. Once your slices of bread are cooked, serve warm with a glob of butter, and some fresh berries followed by a generous drizzle of maple syrup.

Notes

  • It’s best to use a sourdough baguette that is 2 to 3 days old, and sliced into thick strips. The stale baguette is perfect to help soak up all the eggy batter. However, you can choose any type of sourdough sandwich bread you like.
  • Whichever milk you wish to use will work in a French toast recipe. Whether you opt for whole milk, full-fat oat milk, or dairy free, your French toast will remain amazing!
  • Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract for a hint of sweetness and extra warmth.
  • Use butter to grease the pan or griddle for extra richness.
