Sourdough Grilled Cheese Recipe

  • 4 slices of sourdough bread
  • 4 tbsp softened butter
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat. Meanwhile spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter on one side of each piece of bread.
  2. Place 2 slices of cheddar and 2 slices of Swiss atop each slice of buttered sourdough bread. Top the cheese with another slice of buttered sourdough. Ensure the buttered sides are placed directly on top of the cheese.
  3. Repeat this process with the remaining slices of bread and cheese slices. You should be left with 2 sandwiches.
  4. Spread ½ tablespoon of mayonnaise on the outer piece of sourdough bread. Place the sandwiches in a warm skillet, mayonnaise side up. Spread another ½ tablespoon of mayonnaise on the outside of the bread.
  5. Cook the sandwiches for 3 to 4 minutes, then flip the sandwiches over and cook them on the other side for a further 3-4 minutes. The bread should be perfectly golden brown, with melted cheese.
  6. Serve these scrumptious sourdough grilled cheese sandwiches with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Firstly, remember to take your time to grill each side of the bread. Place the sandwich on a cast iron skillet, wait for that magical sizzle and flip it to the other side.
  • Cook slowly, on medium-low heat, to achieve that wonderful golden-brown color.
  • Butter both sides of both pieces of bread, because this is where the delicious flavors come from!
