Is There Egg in Sourdough Bread or Not?

Natasha Krajnc

Traditional sourdough bread recipes do not require the use of eggs. Although lately, they have merged into sourdough recipes by many bakers.

Other ingredients like milk and butter provide the same results, which is why you’ll find that many bakers choose to include these ingredients in their sourdough bread.

Typically, eggs are added to enrich a sourdough recipe, such as challah or brioche bread that carries a moist and buttery texture, with a hint of sweetness.

The addition of egg provides a wonderful texture, flavor, and an overall rich flavor profile.

Adding eggs to your sourdough bread is entirely up to you, and the type of loaf you’re trying to make.

Sourdough bread is often brushed with an egg wash to achieve a nice golden brown color. While certainly delicious, it isn’t great for those following a vegan diet.
