Guide to Freezing Sourdough Starter

Natasha Krajnc

Freezing is a practical method for preserving your starter when you need a break from baking or want to keep a backup.

When done correctly, freezing sourdough starter does not harm its overall quality or viability.

Both freezing and drying sourdough starter have their advantages.

When stored properly in the freezer, sourdough starter can last for several months, if not longer.

A well-maintained frozen sourdough starter can retain its viability for around 3 to 6 months.

It is possible to re-freeze sourdough starter, but it is generally not recommended.
